Endodontics is a dental specialty focused on studying and treating the dental pulp, which is innermost layer of the tooth, which includes the tooth’s living connective tissue and cells. The dental pulp also houses the tooth nerves and blood vessels. If this tooth area gets injured or diseased, it can result in serious tooth pain and sensitivity. The tooth can also die if infection and damage in the dental pulp goes untreated. The goal of endodontic treatment is to restore the health of the tooth and prevent a tooth extraction.
The most common endodontic treatment is root canal therapy, which is often referred to as just a root canal. When you undergo a root canal, our dentist will remove the injured and disease tissue from the tooth, thoroughly clean the tooth and fill it. The tooth will then be capped with a restoration, such as a dental crown, to protect it from reinfection and restore its appearance.
Our dentist may recommend further endodontic treatment if root canal therapy does not work for you or if a tooth is reinfected. Other treatments include root canal retreatment, apicoectomy, pulpal debridement and pulpotomy.
